Skouspel Plus: Rocking the Mother

Our Skouspel Plus music extravaganza drew 15 000 people to the three fabulous Cape Town concerts that showcased more than 40 stars

It was the perfect all-in-one entertainment package: creative, visually stunning, moving and funny. YOU and Huisgenoot’s Skouspel Plus has outgrown its baby shoes to become a show in its own right. Instead of playing second fiddle to Huisgenoot Skouspel at Sun City this Cape Town extravaganza is now in a league of its own.

The tickets for the three Skouspel Plus shows were sold out weeks in advance. GrandWest Casino’s Grand Arena was packed with 15 000 spectators who were blown away by the feast of sound and colour when more than 40 artists gave their best on stage.

At times the show turned into a huge party because the audience couldn’t resist getting up and dancing in the aisles.

Some of the biggest names in the local music industry performed original Afrikaans hits and evergreen numbers such as Barcelona and Hallelujah. Kurt Darren, Nianell, Chris Chameleon, Gloria Bosman, Dozi, Brandon October, Claire Johnston of Mango Groove fame and many others thoroughly entertained the audience for more than three hours.

And in typical Skouspel tradition the singers and musicians not only performed their own songs, some of the big names joined forces for group numbers.

Unlike Skouspel, Skouspel Plus included English hits. And the singers’ rendition of international hits was world-class.

It wasn’t only the singing and terrific performance of the individual artists, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and the South African Youth Choir that had the audience spellbound. The stars also looked fabulous in their designer gear.

“You won’t find anything like this elsewhere in Africa,” actor and Radio Kalahari Orchestra lead singer Ian Roberts said as he went on stage.

Several artists echoed his sentiment. “This is such a large and professional production it’s overwhelming,” legendary Claire Johnston of Mango Groove said. “This is real theatre!”
