Ahead of Spud 2: The Madness Continues opening at cinemas countrywide on Friday 21 June, we have a chat to Sven Ruygrok (Rambo).

We interview Sven Ruygrok, who plays ringleader Robert “Rambo” Black in The Madness Continues. Rambo makes it his mission to get his housemaster Spare Rib fired.

What can Spud fans look forward to in The Madness Continues?

The comedy sets it apart from the first film! Its bigger and filled with new, exciting characters and the funny old ones. Spud 1 was about us finding our feet and introducing all the characters to the audience. Now that that has happened, Spud 2 allows for a deeper look into the Crazy 8 and gives us the chance to flesh out characters and storylines. Spud 2 is even quirkier, funnier, and even more relatable and has a hint of rebellion!

What was your favourite scene to shoot?

Scenes in The Mad House! It is such an iconic symbol in the second book and is all about the rebellion of the teenage years and coming into your own. And I relate a lot to that because my mates and I also built a little shack where we could be rebellious and push the envelope together in Grade 9. So there was a lot riding on these scenes

What is your favourite thing about your character?

I admire Rambo’s leadership skills and the art of truly not caring what people think! A true rebel to the core.

Do you have a lot in common with your character?

We do share some similarities… We both love being in authority but we hate abiding by it. We are both are natural leaders but Rambo is highly skilled at bringing a group together and riling them up. Rambo has moves like Jagger and is way cooler and more charming than I’ll ever be!

What was the funniest moment on set?

I happened to be standing directly underneath the path of the falling ladder to the tree house in a take! And it hit my head HARD! Also watching Boggo fall off his bicycle and Vern falling off the stage onto a cactus plant in Tokai forest remains a classic for me!

Who in the cast did you get along with best?

All! I mean these are some of my best mates and we are family. But who do I know the most? Tom and Blessing as we have shared accommodation together for both Spud1 and Spud2 and with that laughs, farts, and dodgy home-made meals, cooked by me!

Who was the troublemaker on set?

Quite simply… Mad Dog! He definitely lives up to his character name. All I will say was there was some broken glass and a flesh wound involved.

Were there any off-screen romances between cast members?

No, not that I know of. But if you find out please let me know!

Of all the members of the cast, who do you think would make the best couple?

Byron (Simon) and Alex (Christine).

What’s in the pipeline for you this year?

I have been very blessed to be very busy these last six months! I have been involved in a Warner Brothers premiere film called House Party: Tonight’s The Night. I played Orlando Bloom’s son in Jerome Salle’s feature film Zulu. Got the amazing opportunity to play Puck in Fred Abrahams’s production of A Midsummer Nights Dream at Maynardville open air theatre in Cape Town and I am currently on set of an American action sci-fi film called Outpost 37 then hopefully Spud 3. But I still have my sights set on L.A, which is in the pipeline.
