Ahead of Spud 2: The Madness Continues opening at cinemas countrywide tomorrow, Friday 21 June, we have a chat to Tom Burne (Vern)

We interview Tom Burne, who plays Vern Blackadder, better known as “Rain Man”. Vern is Spud’s deranged cubicle mate, who develops a strange friendship with Spare Rib’s cat, Roger.

What can Spud fans look forward to in The Madness Continues?

I think it's far more of a light-hearted film, with a greater focus on the Crazy Eight and their antics. This naturally sets it up as more of an outright comedy when compared to the first film, which was quite emotional and even sombre at times.

What was your favourite scene to shoot?

Without a doubt the "Madhouse" scenes - it was a novel and exciting experience working on a set that had been built from scratch in a studio!

What is your favourite thing about your character?

That he is completely uninfluenced by those around him, he finds his own path through the world and makes no attempt at changing himself in order to fit in.

Do you have a lot in common with your character?

I can relate to certain aspects of him, after all, aren't we all just a little bit crazy at times - I believe the ability to be a bit silly every now and then and not take yourself to seriously is an incredibly valuable one. In general, though, I'd like to think I don't share too much in common with a “mentally-disturbed cretin”.

What was the funniest moment on set?

We spend an inordinate amount of time laughing while on set, but the sight of a deranged Sparerib trying scale a wildly-swinging rope ladder was my most memorable comic moment.

Who in the cast did you get along with the best?

Its really difficult to say, over the course of two movies we have all become so close, its hard to play favourites. However, Sven, Blessing and I have, from day 1 of SPUD 1, always got on like a house on fire.

Who was the troublemaker on set?

We're just a bunch of innocent teenagers, who said anything about trouble??

Were there any off-screen romances between cast members?

Now that would be telling wouldn't it...

Of all the members of the cast, who do you think would make the best couple?

Byron Langley and Genna Blair

What’s in the pipeline for you this year?

I'm currently enrolled at UCT so after that my primary focus will trying to find the delicate balance between studying and enjoying student life...
