Rats described as being "super intelligent" are invading a town in England where tourists are blamed for encouraging the vermin with their littering.

"Super intelligent" rats are reportedly invading an English town.

The vermin - which are immune to regular poison - are said to be thriving in Oxford where tourists are being blamed for the infestation for tossing takeaways and food on the floor for birds to eat.

The giant rats have been spotted sprinting through cemeteries and other outdoor spaces in the town, which is known for its prestigious university.

Oxford University worker Gary Coates was apparently walking home from his local bar when he spotted dozens of the creatures.

He told the Oxford Mail newspaper: "I couldn't believe what I was seeing ... There were rats everywhere and some were the size of squirrels. I would say there were about 20 of them."
