'Tasteless’ Cecil the lion Halloween costume sparks outrage

It’s only August but one costume is already in line to be labelled the most controversial Halloween costume of the year.

Retailer Costumeish.com has been criticised for its decision to sell a costume based on Cecil the Lion, the famed lion who was killed by American dentist Walter James Palmer in July.

The costume, called, ‘Lion Killer Dentist Halloween Costume’ is described as follows:

All Doctor Palmer wanted was to hang dead animals in his house, but what started as an obscure (if legally-dubious) hunting trip has since erupted into a brouhaha of trans-Atlantic proportions.

2015’s most controversial killing has laid bare the rift in American and Zimbabwean attitudes toward exotic game hunting and animal conservation pitting an outraged mob against a Minnesotan dentist in a scandal sure to be remembered for a generation.

Our Lion Killer Dentist Costume features a severed lion’s head mask, bloody smock, and bloody gloves for a gruesome, complete look.

15% of all proceeds will go to a Wildlife Foundation.

Johnathon Weeks, the Founder and Vice President of the company, has defended the decision to sell the costume.

“Cecil was coming up, and just like with many of the other ones, like the Ebola or the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge costumes, we see the trend from users,” he told TIME.

“Halloween is a really tricky day and you see some of the costumes come about and it’s almost like desensitizing things.”

This controversial move follows several retailers’ decision to offer a costume based on Caitlyn Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover earlier this year.

A representative of Spirit Halloween, one of these retailers, rebutted, “Caitlyn is the most important real-life superhero of the year.”
