Our teacher of the week, Charné Kemp, has an enthusiasm you can’t help but catch.

Name and age:

Charné Kruger (22)

What and where do you teach?

I teach Grade 00 at Smiley Kids Primrose in Johannesburg.

Why did you choose teaching as a career?

To teach kids is my passion and my calling. I believe I can make a difference, no matter how small!

Give 3 tips for other teachers in your field.

  1. Patience will get you far.
  2. Parents always enjoy hearing how their kids are doing, especially if they did or said something cute on a particular day. Brag a little about your students; they’re almost like your own!
  3. Make work enjoyable for the kids: dress up and be silly every now and then. Teach them through play.

Give 3 tips for new teachers in any subject or grade:

  1. Always be friendly; you might just make someone’s day!
  2. Build good relationships with the parents, your learners and the other teachers around you.
  3. You never know what’s happening in a child’s home – listen to what they have to say before losing your temper.

What is your favourite equipment/book to use in the classroom?

Any picture storybook. It really doesn’t matter what book you read, but how you read it.

What motivates you?

When the little ones hug me and tell me how much they love me. The people I work with – we have an excellent principal and academic head; they motivate us regularly. When I see how hard everyone around me is working I can’t help but be motivated.

Find Love!
