Our Teacher of the Week this week is Elsa Boshoff.

Name and age

Elsa Boshoff (52)

What and where do you teach?

I teach accounting for Grades 9 to 12 at Curro Private School in Durbanville, Cape Town.

Why did you choose teaching as a career?

I think my teachers inspired me. I believe I’m “raising” good bookkeepers, accountants and auditors.

Give three tips to other teachers who also teach your subject:

  • Don’t get stuck in a rut – try new methods.
  • Explain “why” and not just “how”.
  • Be happy about every child that improves, and tell him or her when they do.

Give three tips for new teachers in any subject:

  • You have to personally work through every piece of work the students have to do.
  • Accept that you’ll make mistakes and don’t try to hide it. Admit your mistakes and then fix it.
  • Love all the students – even the undisciplined ones.  This sometimes takes some self-discipline!

What is your favourite technology or book to use in class?

A data projector with which you can show the correct answers on the board and a whiteboard on which you can explain the calculations.

What motivates you?

My family, and children who say, “Thank you ma’am”.
