Workbooks for Grades 7-12 in all the main subjects, tutorial videos for senior high school grades, old matric exam papers, Caps documents – all free of charge!

YOU recently attended African Education Week and was surprised by the teaching resources available free of charge. Yes, you saw right – free of charge! Freedom Toasters or e-Learning Toasters are electronic devices teachers can use to download teaching resources.

The devices ? resembling a thin plastic box about child height with a flat-screen TV inside ? are a treasure trove of learning and reading material for kids of all ages. Teachers can access the material by inserting either a DVD or memory stick into the device and downloading the copy. Alternatively it can be directly downloaded wirelessly onto an e-tablet or computer.

There are many wonderful things available on the Toasters but one thing we were struck by was a telematic teaching project run by Stellenbosch University in conjunction with the Western Cape department of education. Top teachers from the Western Cape travel to Stellenbosch to present maths, physics, geography, accountancy, Afrikaans and English to matrics from a hi-tech video studio. The lessons are transmitted to needy schools in the Western and Northern Cape via an internet link and learners see the lesson on a large screen in their own community. Recordings of these top-quality lessons can be downloaded from the e-Learning Toasters so matrics in other parts of the country can also benefit from them.

Teachers can visit Freedom Toasters at various venues countrywide. Go to breadbin.co.za for a map detailing the nearest Toaster to you. There’s also a comprehensive list of available material that can be downloaded. For more info go to freedomtoaster.org.
