A 19-year-old woman whose son was found wandering on the N1 near the Grasmere off-ramp was sent for mental observation by the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, Gauteng traffic police said.

"The court has referred her to Sterkfontein so that her mental state can be checked," said spokeswoman Busaphi Nxumalo, referring to a facility outside Krugersdorp.

The woman was arrested on the night of April 5, two days after her 16-month-old boy narrowly escaped being hit by a truck while walking along the N1 highway near the Grasmere off-ramp.

She was found guilty of attempted murder and child abandonment.

The case was postponed to December 2.
