Rating: 3/5

The 308 GTI is too comfortable to be a serious contender – there’s excessive body roll, an oversized steering wheel and a mile-long throw of the gearlever. And its looks more Mike Schutte than Mike Schumacher.

Despite its shortcomings it’s an entertaining drive – you can chuck it into a corner and steer with the throttle, proper old-school hot-hatch style.

It hasn’t forgotten its roots.
