Thandie Newton warned speaking about sexual assault could hurt career

22 March 2017

Thandie Newton was warned her career might suffer if she continued speaking about the sexual assault she experienced within the entertainment business.

Last year the Westworld actress lifted the lid on sexual abuse in Hollywood, after revealing a director put a camera up her skirt during an audition.

Thandie made the allegations in an interview with W Magazine, but did not identify the man, who she claimed "asked me to touch my t*ts and think about the guy making love to me in the scene." She admitted at the time she thought it "a little weird."

In an interview with the Radio Times, Thandie, who will next be seen in BBC police drama Line Of Duty as a police officer tackling an investigation into the cover-up of a sexual abuse at a boys' home, discussed how she related to the storyline - revealing some people "didn't like it one bit" when she spoke up about her experiences.

"I understand that because I’m someone who has spoken out about my abuse (as a very young actress) and people didn’t like it one bit," she explained to the publication, discussing the dark theme of the police drama.

"People have told me to stop and I have felt it did affect whether I was getting employed or not… But I hope that somewhere a mum taking her kid to the set will just be that little bit more aware."

The 44-year-old mother of three spoke out about her experiences in the hope that other young actors will understand that sort of situation is unacceptable.

"I was so so naive when I started out and I realise now that we have to prepare our kids – I’ve got two beautiful daughters, one is 16 one is 11," Thandie told W Magazine last July. "One person will read this and it will stop them getting sexually abused by a director. That’s the person I’m interested in."

Thandie will return to British screens DCI Roz Huntley in the drama for its fourth series, which begins on Sunday.
