The end of the road . . .

The team Smoke, Sweat and Tears were eliminated from The Ultimate Braai Master (UBM), SABC3’s popular reality outdoor cooking show, last night. Team members Simon Good and Chris Kastern share their thoughts . . .


You did quite well and were only eliminated in episode 10. Was this a big disappointment?

Simon: Most definitely. What we were learning along the way was invaluable, and with that our self-belief grew and yes, of course we expected to go further, possibly even win!

Chris: Simon and I exceeded our expectations on this incredible Ultimate Braai Master adventure and although we were absolutely gutted not to be able to see the last few locations, we were stoked to have been to some incredible places.

What went wrong?

Chris: We planned what we thought would be some really delicious braai broodjies.  Unfortunately our jaffle and toasted sarmie simply didn’t have enough time over the coals and didn’t have a nice brown crust when we served them. Definitely a major downfall in the challenge!

Why did you enter? Simon: After watching last season the experience alone looked too good to miss. Chris: When auditions for the second season started Simon suggested we enter and I didn’t need a second invitation. We didn’t get through in Cape Town but persevered and were invited to audition again in Port Elizabeth where we got through to the second round of auditions. What were your most memorable moments? Simon: Food wise, without a doubt creating the “winning pie” at the Tiffendell challenge. Travel wise, being able to experience the Wild Coast was a dream come true. Chris: Without a doubt the challenge in Mafa’s village in Lesotho ? braaiing to feed an entire village and the look on the children’s faces when they ate, being invited to share in a traditional evening celebration and having the opportunity to partake in the ritual of drinking the local sorghum beer, singing and dancing with the men and women of the village around a raging bonfire. 

What was your biggest fear during the competition?

Chris: Wet wood and not being able to see the next location of the Ultimate Braai Master road trip.

What was the most extreme challenge?

Chris: Braaiing in Rhodes village in the Eastern Cape.  Not only had Simon and I never heard of the key protein for the challenge, a Greywing Francolin game bird, we also had no idea of how to make puff pastry – a key component of making a braai pie. Luckily the West Coast Bro’s helped us out with a recipe for the pastry and we ended up winning the challenge, no mean feat considering we had to braai in the snow!

In which way did UBM change your life?

Chris: I have to take my family to explore more of this incredible country we live in; it’s a country with inspiring landscapes, a rich and diverse culture, radical destination variety and delicious regional braai cuisine! It’s my mission to take my wife and two sons to some of the places we experienced on the Ultimate Braai Master road trip.

During filming you visited some of South Africa’s most pristine outdoor environments. Which one is your favourite? Chris: Coral Divers in Sodwana. I grew up near the coast and this location was everything that a fishmonger from the Garden Route could wish for. Which team was your toughest competition? Simon:  The team we “feared” the most were the West Coast Bro’s – always calm, always collected and they always got mentioned positively in the judges’ deliberation.
