The heartwarming photos Joost shared on his last birthday

06 February 2017

He celebrated his 45th birthday quietly at home, surrounded by his loved ones.

Joost van der Westhuizen spent the special day on 22 February last year with his family at his home in Dainfern in Johannesburg, where they ate potjiekos and relaxed.

The rugby legend passed away on 6 February 2017, after a long battle with motor neuron disease (MND).

Earlier that day, Amor shared beautiful photos of her, Joost and their children on her Facebook page to wish her former husband a happy birthday.

"Congratulations to Joost van der Westhuizen your birthday today," the mom-of-two wrote. "May you have a wonderful year and be blessed for what you do for everyone! Much love Jordan, Kylie and me xxx."

At the time, Joost was part of a medical trial for a drug that may have helped combat the disease.

The former rugby star was one of a group of South African MND sufferers who had been given access to the drug GM604 on compassionate grounds.

“It gives hope,” Joost said in an exclusive interview with YOU last year, communicating via the device that allows him to write down his answers using his eyes. “Not just for me but for everyone with MND."

“I’m hoping to talk. I want to hold my kids again. I just want to see my kids grow up and be happy.”
