Marli van Breda is awake and talking, according to weekend reports.

The 16-year-old was critically injured in a brutal axe attack that killed her mother, father and brother.

According to Rapport, a source close to the family said Marli had asked simple questions like "Who are you?" and "What year is it?"

Marli is still under police protection at a private hospital in Stellenbosch.

It's been almost two weeks since her father Martin (54), mother Teresa (55) and brother Rudi van Breda (22) were found hacked to death in the early hours of Tuesday, January 27 in their luxury home in Stellenbosch. No arrests have been made and many questions about the murders remain unanswered.

The scene on the De Zalze golf estate is still under investigation by police.

Yesterday Sunday Times reported Henri van Breda (20), who also survived the horrific attack and was the one who alerted emergency services, only made the call four hours later.

Henri allegedly reported the attack at 07:30 am but the murders occurred at 03:30 am.

The paper also claims that Henri's cuts and bruises may have been self-inflicted.

"Sources close to the police investigation revealed that the official police injury form completed by the doctor who examined Henri after the murders states that the scratches and bruises on his arms were 'self-inflicted'," Timeslive published on their site this morning.

Rapport also confirmed that a lawyer who acted on behalf of Shrien Dewani was approached by  the Van Breda family to represent Henri.
