According to reports, the twister caused major damage, tearing through the roof of Phumlani Mall, outside buildings of the Tembisa Hospital as well as homes in the area.

An estimated 20 people were injured and 400 left displaced due to heavy damage of their houses and shacks in the Tembisa area.

Three people were hurt after the Phumlani Mall roof came tumbling down.

“Initially reports were received that several people were trapped under the rubble. However, upon a scene assessment, emergency workers only found three people with minor injuries,” ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak told News24.

It is believed their injuries were caused by falling debris.

"Paramedics and rescue workers found debris scattered across the parking lot of the mall as well as twisted metal strewn at the entrance of the mall. Several vehicles were also damaged."

Mall spokesperson, Godfrey Mashakgomo, told the outlet, "the whole mall is f***d up." This is the second reported tornado to hit the country, after one was spotted in Magaliesburg on Monday.
