The Whopper has arrived!

Burger King, the second-biggest fast-food restaurant chain in the world, opened in the Mother City today.

Hundreds of people queued outside the restaurant to taste the world-renowned Whopper burger. The first 1 000 customers got free burgers and personalities such as radio DJ Liezel van der Westhuizen and comedian Marc Lottering were among those who shared the pleasure.

The restaurant, on Cape Town’s Heerengracht, is just the start. Hassen Adams, chairman of Grand Parade Investments, which owns the Burger King rights in South Africa, told Moneyweb earlier this week the company has great plans for the future.

The first phase focuses on Cape Town but Adams says the company will soon start planning Johannesburg restaurants.

Burger King opened for business in 1954 and the first branch outside America opened in Puerto Rico in 1963. Today the group has 13 000 restaurants in 88 countries. South Africa is the third country in Africa where you can buy a Whopper. Egypt and Morocco together have 25 branches.
