"My family and me were attacked... by a guy with an axe."

On January 27, 2015 a single emergency call in the early hours led to the gruesome discovery in De Zalze Golf Estate in Stellenbosch.

The Van Breda family had been brutally murdered in an axe attack.

Two survived: Henri, then 20, and his 16-year-old sister Marli. Henri sustained minor injuries, but his sister was badly wounded. Their parents, Martin van Breda (54), his wife Teresa (55), and their eldest son Rudi (22), were dead.

After the incident, Henri placed a call to emergency services, which eNCA acquired in full and published on YouTube.

Now, over a year after the attack, Henri is set to appear in the Stellenbosch magistrates court in connection with the murders.

The 21-year-old reported to police yesterday afternoon with his lawyer and his girlfriend.

He will appear on three counts of murder and one of attempted murder.
