One of the great things about new clothes is that crispy, fresh feeling they have.

It wouldn't make sense to pop them in the washing machine before wearing the, right?

According to Donald Belsito, a professor of dermatology at Columbia University Medical Center in the US, you really should wash new clothes before wearing them.

He explained to the The Wall Street Journal that Belsito that human skin could easily become vulnerable to dyes and other harsh chemicals retained in the manufacturing process.

As if that wasn't scary enough, he also pointed out that new clothes aren't really that clean - they've probably been tried on before, thus leaving the buyer exposed to other people's germs.

"I have seen cases of lice that were possibly transmitted from trying on in the store, and there are certain infectious diseases that can be passed on through clothing,” he said.

"The other infestation I’ve seen from clothing is scabies."

The professor also explained how from the manufacturing, shipping and distribution processes, there's really no telling how many people have come in contact with the new clothes.

"In terms of hygiene, it’s a very good thing to do," he told the Journal. "Being a dermatologist, I’ve seen examples of some strange stuff, so I don’t take any chances."
