Domestic violence victims often carry permanent scars of abuse for the rest of their lives. These marks can be quite haunting reminders of the past. While surgery could help improve the appearance of some scars, others may never full go away.

But one tattoo artist has come up with a beautiful way to help these victims. Flavia Carvalho, from Brazil, inks over the women’s scars to create beautiful and empowering works of art. And the tattoos are all free.

Her journey began in 2013 when a woman asked her to cover up a scar she got after a man stabbed her for rejecting him at a nightclub. "When she saw the finished tattoo, she was extremely moved, and that deeply touched me," Flavia told the Huffington Post.

Inspired by the woman’s upliftment, she started a project titled ‘A Pele da Flor’ or ‘The Skin of the Flower’, a venture that gives free cover up tattoos over scars left from knife stabbings and shootings. She also inks stunning designs on women who have mastectomy scars.

“The only ‘cost’ women need to invest is to choose a design for their tattoos!”
