Top Billing for a bride

She's a bubbly TV personality who gets to travel to exotic destinations and cover fashionable red-carpet events so it’s no surprise that there was an abundance of glitz and glamour when Lorna Maseko tied the knot.

Dressed in a gown that featured a lace bodice decorated with thousands of Swarovski crystals and layers of silk and tulle, the Top Billing field presenter and former prima ballerina looked like a fairytale princess.

Her lucky groom, Gcina “GC” Lukhele, was so entranced when he watched her walking down the aisle that he had to remind himself to breathe.

“My heart kept thudding in my chest – I couldn’t take my eyes off her,” he says.

The couple exchanged vows in front of 150 of their closest family and friends at the Memoire wedding venue in Muldersdrift. Although the media were clamouring to cover the event Lorna and GC were determined it would be a private affair but a month down the line the newlyweds are happy to share all the details of their big day with us.

The pair, who were introduced four years ago at church by a mutual friend, went to quite a bit of trouble to find the perfect spot for their nuptials.

“We didn’t want to get married in a cold building built in the 1800s. We wanted something modern and beautiful, and we found exactly what we were looking for,” says GC (31), a Joburg-based BMW car salesman.

Scatter cushions and throws were strewn around the interior to add a casual touch to proceedings.  “We had a cosmopolitan mix of guests and wanted them to feel comfortable and not intimidated by the church service,” says Lorna (27), who rose to fame as South Africa’s first black professional ballerina.

The ceremony included hymns sung by the Rivers Church band and verses read from the Bible.

Lorna reckons she has gained a greater appreciation for weddings from the experience. “The only hiccup we had was guests having to wait around while we took our pictures,” she says.

“It made me realise I should be patient at other weddings and not complain about the time because it’s the bride and groom’s day after all.”
