Give an old piece of furniture a new look with Rust-Oleum spray paint – it won’t break the bank and it’s fun!

If you’re looking to spruce up your home but don’t want to spend too much, spray-painting an old piece of furniture can be the perfect way to express your own style – for no more than the price of a can of paint. Not only is it fun, you’ll have the satisfaction of creating something uniquely yours. Go from old to new (or new to old with a distressed finish) in a matter of moments! You too can create beautiful and unique looks like these three projects. The possibilities are endless with Rust-Oleum!

For an ultra-matte finish that’s totally on trend, transform furniture with Rust-Oleum’s Chalked Ultra Matte paint. Chalked paint can be distressed to give a timeless, vintage look. No prepping is needed besides a light sanding and it offers fast-drying, one-coat coverage. It’s suitable for wood, metal, ceramic and canvas. Use the Chalked Protective Topcoat for durability and protection. Available in a handy aerosol for smaller jobs and touch-ups, as well as in a brush-on format. Choose from nine colours.

Whatever furniture you’re painting with Rust-Oleum Chalked paint, the process is the same.

  1. Remove any fittings, and separate the pieces of the item you want to paint.
  2. For optimal results, lightly sand down the furniture with a fine to medium sanding sponge or 180–220 grit sandpaper.
  3. Wipe down with a slightly damp cloth to remove all traces of dust.
  4. Use a paintbrush to apply the first coat, or spray on the first coat in a well-ventilated space. Leave this to dry.
  5. If necessary, apply 1-2 additional coats and allow for sufficient drying time between coats.
  6. For a distressed look, sand any edges or relief areas to expose the original surface until the desired level of distressing has been achieved.
  7. Protect the painted finish with Rust-Oleum Matte Protective Topcoat sealer. (Also available in brush-on or aerosol format – choose the sealant that matches your paint.)

Handy hints for the ideal finish when spray-painting

  • Always spray-paint outdoors or in a well-ventilated area and avoid spraying in windy or dusty conditions.
  • Ensure you cover the surrounding area. You can also turn a cardboard box on its side to create a handy spray booth.
  • Ensure the object you want to spray is clean and dry.
  • Shake the can for a minute before using and often during use.
  • Hold the can 30 cm from the surface when spraying.
  • Keep the can in motion while spraying and “stop off the object” – in other words don’t spray too heavily in one spot as this will create runs. Apply two or more light coats a few minutes apart.
