She reportedly tried to slit her throat and her wrists with a scalpel.

Soniya Koekemoer (34), who killed her nine-year-old daughter Michelle last year, tried to take her own life on Sunday.

Her stepfather Dawie Viljoen confirmed the news to YOU.

It's believed she stole the scalpel while she was being treated at a hospital on Sunday for asthma.

"We don't really know what's going on," said a worried Dawie.

"I keep on calling, but no one at the hospital can tell me how she's doing."

Koekemoer is being treated at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg.

She was sentenced to 18 years behind bars last year after she strangled her daughter with a rope in their apartment in Vanderbijlpark. She is serving her sentence at Johannesburg Central Prison.

Last year it emerged in court that Koekemoer had battled depression since her childhood and had tried to commit suicide 27 times.

The Department of Correctional Services could not immediately be reached for comment.
