Victorious season for BIG VIC

When you think about sportsmen on the fast track Willem Alberts’ name comes to mind. Barely a year ago and despite his best efforts and those of his Golden Lions teammates he was in the midst of the Gauteng trophy drought.

Now, as a Shark, he has a big Currie Cup tick next to his name.

Even better, almost overnight he has become one of the most exciting new finds in Springbok rugby – and on the eve of the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand, just when South Africa could use a little more vooma.

The Pretoria-born player has burst through a seemingly impenetrable wall of defenders at crucial moments for the Boks.

Nick Easter, England’s leading loose forward and occasional captain, singled out Willem in a recent column in which he admitted the Boks “physically and mentally bruised” England at Twickenham. “Willem Alberts is having a dream start to his Test career: three times a replacement, three times getting on and three times a try-scorer.”

It has indeed been an exceptional year for Willem on and off the rugby field. He married the love of his life, Nicolene.

“It’s been a fantastic year so far in every respect up to now. I’m with a great rugby union and I’m happily married to a wonderful woman – I still have that honeymoon feeling and I’m enjoying it very much.” Willem says.

“I just try to do my best,” he says. “I think it was simply a question of being in the right place at the right time. My legs were fresher than the other guys’ because I went on as a replacement in the last three Tests. In the end it’s all down to how the team performs. They do the hard work and allow the gaps to open. I just had to dive over the line [at Twickenham].”
