Viola Davis: My daughter’s a little star

The 2011 film about the plight of African American maids in 1960's Mississippi won countless awards, including an Oscar for Octavia Spencer's turn as maid Minny.

Viola also put in a star turn as house helper Aibileen Clark, and her young daughter Genesis loves recreating the scene at home.

'When we do the scene, she lights up'

"Maybe a little bit!" Viola smiled when Us Weekly magazine asked if Genesis was an actress in the making. "She likes looking at the last scene from The Help. Inevitably she cries. Then she says, 'OK, Mommy, let’s do the scene. You be Aibie and I’ll be Mae Mobley.' When we do the scene, she lights up."

Alongside a successful big screen career, Viola is also well known to TV audiences for her role in hit show How to Get Away with Murder.

She bagged the Screen Actors Guild Award for best actress last month, but missed out on the Golden Globe. However her famous fan base ensured she wasn't too down about the loss.

"Meryl Streep, Gwyneth Paltrow, Oprah Winfrey — all these people rushed up to me to say how much they enjoyed the show. It was shocking!” she laughed.

Explaining why she took the part of Annalise Keating in the show, the 49-year-old actress reveals she was ready to be the star of a project.

"It’s just the role. I wasn’t offered anything like this, where I could shine, in film. I was getting offered roles where I’m No. 8 on the call sheet and some of my scenes may or may not be cut. And then inevitably in a review it’s like, 'Viola Davis wasn’t used enough.' I didn’t want to be the third girl from the left anymore," she admitted.
