Vitamin supplements - do we really need them?

To supplement or not to supplement, that is the question.

Health food stores are stocked to the brim with jars of bizarre-sounding supplements, each claiming to have different health improving properties. With prices ranging from affordable to expensive, it can be a little mind-boggling to decide what to buy.

But do we really need to take any additional health supplements at all? Our ancestors have been living long and fruitful lives without the incorporation of vitamin packed capsules. A healthy diet which incorporates all food groups would surely give us all of the nutrients we need to thrive, wouldn’t it?

“There’s been around a 50 per cent depletion in the quality of vitamins and minerals in fruit and vegetables, so there is actually a physiological requirement for a good quality multivitamin even if you eat organically and really healthily,” diet, yoga and wellbeing expert Chris James explained to Cover Media.

Because of our increasingly intensive farming methods, the nutrients in the soil aren’t being given enough time to replenish naturally. This means that there are less vitamins in the soil, and so less vitamins in the food we get from it.

Researchers conducted a study at Austin’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry into this subject.

“Efforts to breed new varieties of crops that provide greater yield, pest resistance and climate adaptability have allowed crops to grow bigger and more rapidly, but their ability to manufacture or uptake nutrients has not kept pace with their rapid growth,” Donald Davis, leader of the study, told the Journal of the American College of Nutrition in 2004.

So what can we do to make up for this lack of nutrition from our diet? Taking regular supplements is certainly a step in the right direction. The higher quality the better, but for those on a budget, you can find some in your local drugstore for a very reasonable price. If you don’t want to fuss around with lots of different pills in the morning and are simply after a high grade multivitamin, try Chris James’ Magical Multi for a great all-in-one.
