Wearing a black and green jacket and a sombre expression, Jason Rhode appeared in the Stellenbosch Magistrates Court in connection with his wife's alleged murder.

This after the Sotheby’s CEO was taken into custody in front of his three daughters by armed policemen in their Johannesburg home at 6.30 on Monday morning. He was taken to Stellenbosch by police soon after.

In court, the 47-year-old's lawyer, Pete Mihalik said his client had been arrest illegally. He said the State has has destroyed Rohde and his children's lives and reputations, and the police acted in bad faith.

Susan (47) was found dead on 24 July in a hotel room on Spier wine estate, close to Stellenbosch.

According to Rohde's lawyer Daniel Witz, the property mogul had agreed to hand himself over to police last week if he was a suspect.

“Despite the agreement, the police still went ahead and did what they wanted to,” Witz previously told YOU.

At this point, it has not been made public what the charge against Rohde is. “It will probably be murder,” said Witz.

The tragedy occurred when the couple attended an annual Sotheby’s conference on Saturday 23 July and were due to fly back to Johannesburg on the Sunday.

Initially it was believed that Susan had committed suicide.

According to EWN, Rohde claims his wife got up before he did that morning and went to the bathroom to get ready.

But when he later woke up, he says he was unable to open the bathroom door and called hotel workers for help.

Susan was found hanging from the back of the door with a cord around her neck.

Spokesperson for the police Captain Frederick van Wyk said the initial suicide inquest was commuted to a murder investigation on 4 August after the postmortem.

Netwerk24 previously reported that Susan was “strangled with bare hands.”

According to Rapport, the couple had fallen out over Jason’s alleged extra marital affair before her death.
