There are a couple of films on this weekend that would go our list of 100 Movies To Watch Before You Die. So if you haven’t yet seen The Hunger Games, Elysium or The Usual Suspects, this is the weekend to stay in, make some popcorn and settle down in front of the TV!

Friday 21 March

The Hunger Games

MNet Action (channel 106) 8 pm

If you haven’t watched this movie yet, catch it tonight! Jennifer Lawrence shines in the role of Katniss Everdeen, a teenage girl who volunteers to take her sister’s place in the most horrendous reality show imaginable – a fight to the death between teens from each of the 12 districts of Panem.

Saturday 22 March

Elizabeth: The Golden Age

SABC3 7.30 pm

If you like historical dramas, this one’s for you. Cate Blanchett reprises her role as Queen Elizabeth in this film which details the crises the powerful monarch endured in the latter years of her reign, including an assassination attempt and romantic disappointments.

Our Family Wedding

e.tv 8 pm

If this young couple thought saying their I Do’s would be easy, they clearly weren’t counting on their families and friends getting involved. Starring America Ferrera (of Ugly Betty fame) and Forest Whitaker, it ticks all the boxes for a romantic comedy.

Sunday 23 March

M-Net 8.05 pm

Sci-fi just got local and lekker, thanks to director Neill Blomkamp and actors Sharlto Copley and Brandon Auret. The year is 2154 and the wealthy live on an idyllic space station with special machines that can heal any illness while the have-nots remain on a ruined Earth. It also stars Hollywood heavyweights Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, but Sharlto certainly holds his own.  Worth a watch.

The Usual Suspects

e.tv 10.05 pm

After a hijacking in New York, five conmen are brought in for questioning. They’re annoyed about being targeted by the cops for a crime they didn’t commit and plan their revenge. Stellar performances by Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne and Benicio Del Toro. The plot’s quite convoluted so keep your wits about you!
