In a world of technology, it can be easy to forget the simple pleasure of curling up with a good book. So here are 7 reasons why you should swop the remote or put down your phone for a good novel.

1.     Reading can chill you out

Feeling stressed lately? Research shows reading a book is one of the most effective ways to overcome stress, beating out old favorites such as listening to music, enjoying a cup of tea or even exercising. So get your favourite books together and start chilling.

2.     It makes the world a better place

Readers are active participants in the world around them. True story. Research shows people who read for pleasure are many times more likely than those who don’t to visit museums and attend concerts, and are almost three times as likely to perform volunteer and charity work.

3.     It keeps your brain sharp

A lifetime of reading might just help keep your brain in shape. Research found those who engaged in mentally stimulating activities (such as reading) earlier and later on in life experienced slower memory decline compared to those who didn't.

4.     It helps you speak your mind

Although it doesn’t always make you a better communicator, those who read tend to have a more varied range of words to express how they feel and to get their point across. This increases exponentially with the more volumes you consume, giving you a higher level of vocabulary to use in everyday life.

5.     It makes you more interesting

Having a library of information you’ve picked up from reading will come in handy in any academic or scholarly conversation. You’ll be able to engage a wider variety of people in conversation and in turn improve your knowledge and conversational skills.

6.      It boosts your imagination and creativity

Reading exposes you to a world of imagination, showing you nothing is impossible in this world. You’re only limited by what you can imagine. And the worlds described in books, as well as other people’s views and opinions will help you expand your understanding of what is possible.

7.     And, lastly, simply, it’s entertaining

Reading can be much more enthralling than watching a movie or a TV show; it keeps us amused while developing life skills. Plus, it, along with a good cup of coffee, will make a great picture on Instagram!
