A photographer on the Hawaiian island of Maui made a tragic discovery. As part of her photography project The Homeless Paradise Diana Kim photographs homeless people in the island’s capital Honolulu. She began with her project in 2003 and in 2012 she came across her father among the homeless in the city. Her parents separated when Diana was little and she later lost contact with her dad. Diana told NBC News her father had once been a photographer and that he taught her the art, but later became absent from her life. "He suffered from severe schizophrenia, and left untreated, he was not always responsive. There were many instances when it appeared as if he was arguing with someone, but nobody was there."

After their reunification Diana encouraged her dad to have treatment for his condition but it was only in October last year after suffering a heart attack that he agreed. Diana says her dad is much better these days. According to reports he’s receiving treatment, is looking for part-time work and even wants to visit his family in South Korea.
