She faked her pregnancy, wore a latex artificial belly and fooled her family and friends for months.

With her husband in jail for drug trafficking and the pain of two recent miscarriages, the 35-year-old woman was desperate to have a baby.

As the Italian woman’s ‘due date’ drew nearer, she was forced to deliver the baby she had supposedly carried for nine months.

She approached a Romanian mother and bought the woman’s baby for £16 800 (R290 000) but soon changed her mind.

The baby was of mixed descent -- the 25-year-old biological mother was Romanian while the father was a man from Mali -– and there was no way she would be able to explain herself out of this one. After three days, the woman returned the baby to her mother.

According to the Huffington Post Italy, the Italian woman, biological mother and a man from Morocco who helped make the deal happen was arrested.

Surrogacy is illegal in Italy.

Officials at a registry office in Latina, a city in the south of Rome, first became suspicious in February this year when a woman asked how to register a baby that had been born at home.

The woman never returned to have the child registered and officials contacted her but were never provided with clear answers. Something about the story seemed fishy to officials and they took the case to the police.

The police eventually found the baby girl, healthy and in the care of her father, who works in Rome.

The month-old baby has now been placed in foster care.
