Elwood aka Yoda, a Chihuahua and Chinese-crested cross breed who was named the world’s ugliest dog in 2007, has suddenly died.

Elwood’s owner, Karen Quigley (52) of New Jersey, USA, says the canine died unexpectedly on Thanksgiving morning. Fighting back tears, she said, “It was very sudden.”

While the eight-year-old dog had been battling health issues in recent months, he did appear to be doing quite well.

Elwood’s distinctive looks is what helped him to claim the unfortunate title. With his dark, hairless little body and white tuft of fur on his head which resembled a mohawk, he quickly claimed the nickname of Yoda or ET for his resemblance to the famous sci-fi characters.

After claiming the wacky title, the little canine became the topic of a children’s book that advocates acceptance.

Proving that beauty is only skin deep, the dog brought smiles to the faces of many people. He also contributed to various charities and nonprofit organisations through appearances at more than 200 events.
