That's right peeps, the former Disney heartthrob, known for his squeaky-clean good looks, is set to star as notorious American serial killer, Ted Bundy, in an upcoming psychological thriller called . . . wait for it . . . Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will be told from the perspective of Bundy's longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer, who eventually turned her evil boyfriend in.

He was executed in 1989 aged 42 after confessing to killing and raping over 30 women between 1974-1978.

Producer Nicolas Chartier has described Zac (29) as the "perfect" actor to take on the role, telling Deadline,

"He can play both the depth and the charm that this guy had in equal measures, and which allowed him to manipulate these women in such a terrifying way."

Filming is set to start in October and the movie will be directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Joe Berlinger, whose credits include the Paradise Lost documentaries and Some Kind of Monster, about the heavy metal band Metallica.

The role marks a massive departure for Zac. After getting his big break playing the male lead in the widely popular High School Musical films, he went on to star in comedies such as Bad Neighbours and Dirty Grandpa.

His most recent movie was the Baywatch remake opposite Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, which is set to hit cinemas later this month.
