The ultimate playlist for your family road trip

16 March 2017

These melodic tunes will keep everybody entertained and singing while on your journey

If you’re planning a family road trip, a playlist packed with classics and epic sing-alongs is just as important as petrol and padkos.

The perfect music selection will keep the family entertained, keep their minds off the long drive, and maybe even drown out the sounds of the odd disagreement between siblings in the back seat.

It’s hard to find current music that appeals to everybody, so when all fails, stick to the classics – with a few recent feel-good tunes thrown in for good measure.

We’ve compiled this playlist to keep the whole family entertained while en route to your destination. It’s time to break out those seatbelt dance moves and your epic air guitar skills!

Outkast – Hey Ya

Ease the tension and get everybody moving with this sing-along track. We’ve all gotten a bit carried away while singing (read performing) this one.
“Now I want to see y'all on your baddest behaviour. Lend me some sugar, I am your neighbour! Shake it, sh-shake it! Shake it like a Polaroid picture”.

Kurt Darren – Loslappie

Can your family resist the allure of this local classic? Please teach us your ways? Perfect for when you’re on your way home and ready for a good laugh. Catchy, slightly nonsensical and perfect to encourage bilingualism and our eclectic roots.
“O, ek wil huistoe gaan, na mamma toe. Die rivier is vol, my trane rol. 'n Bokkie wat vanaand, by my wil lê. Sy kan maar lê, ek is 'n loslappie. Loslappie”.

Rita Ora – Anywhere

This feel-good song is relatively new, but it’s a worthy contender. Rita sings about a vacation – and the beat will get everybody dancing to some good old pop, so it sneaks into the epic playlist.
“Paradise delivered and we call it a vacation… Just anywhere away with you”

Aly & A.J – Walking on Sunshine

This more recent version of the classic by Katrina and the Waves is bound to get everybody moving. The up-tempo arrangement and feel-good lyrics could be the perfect addition to your car ride. Share the love and sing along!
“I used to think maybe you loved me, now I know that it's true… I'm walking on sunshine, whoaaaa”

Journey - Don’t Stop Believin’

What’s a long drive – or karaoke, without this 80’s inspirational number? Just emphasise that you WILL make it to the destination while watching the other cars pass by and pretending you’re making the music video.
“Don't stop believing. Hold on to the feeling. Streetlights people.”

Jonas Blue - Fast Car ft. Dakota

This contemporary remake brings a refreshing melodic twist to Tracy Chapman’s hit song. The lyrics offer escapism and the perfect musical complement to your long drive.

“You got a fast car, I want a ticket to anywhere. Maybe we make a deal. Maybe together we can get somewhere. Any place is better. Starting from zero, got nothing to lose”

Shekinah & Kyle Deutsch - Back To The Beach

With lyrics that are tailor-made for a trip to the beach, this local track will be a great addition to your playlist. It’s also not a radio regular anymore, so its charms can be appreciated once more.

“Let's take it back to the beach. Where we were young and carefree. This is how it should be. Said the city don't feel me. Let's take it back to the beach”.

TRESOR featuring AKA - Mount Everest

These two talented local artists created a sure-fire hit. Picture the windows rolled down, breeze blowing and some calming melodies filling the car while the driver does all the work. We’re here for the sightseeing after all. AKA’s verse provides the perfect accompaniment and makes you want to get moving with some epic shoulder dancing.
“Take you higher, higher, higher than empire state. Take you higher, higher, higher than Mount Everest”

Vanessa Carlton – A Thousand Miles

At this point, everybody has had the pleasure of seeing Terry Crews' iconic car performance of this track in the cult classic movie, White Chicks. If you haven’t, be sure to check it out! You’re welcome.

Cues “Makin' my way downtown. Walkin' fast, faces pass. And I'm home-bound” ta na na na naa…

Madonna – Holiday

This vintage Madonna smash just makes your heart beat faster and spreads that feel-good feelings from the first few notes. You don’t have to be from the 80’s to appreciate this holiday-themed hit.

“It's time for the good times. Forget about the bad times, oh yeah. One day to come together to release the pressure. We need a holiday”.
