Hope for eczema sufferers

10 August 2017

Since its introduction in South Africa, Eau Thermale Avène has helped thousands of South Africans care for their sensitive skin – from everyday skin regimes to specific products for more severe skin problems.

Zaahid Swartland (4) and his sister Zahraa (5) from Cape Town both suffered from severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) since the age of three months.

“At night we couldn’t sleep because they used to scratch, scratch, scratch and sometimes there was even blood on the sheets,” their father, Faahim, says.

Eczema-prone skin is generally dry and appears dull and rough.

During flare-ups, patches appear displaying symptoms of extreme irritation – the skin is flaky and oozing at first, then thickens and dries up.

In infants, these patches are usually on the cheeks, forehead, torso and limbs. When children are a bit older, their large skin folds such as inside the elbows and back of the knees are affected. During flare-ups their skin becomes inflamed and extremely itchy, and it affects every part of their daily life.

In September 2015 Zaahid and Zahraa – on the recommendation of their dermatologist – were selected to travel to the Avène Hydrotherapy Center in the south of France with their parents, Tougeeda and Faahim, with the hope of finding some relief for their worsening skin condition.

During their three weeks at the center they underwent various therapies, all incorporating Avène Thermal Spring Water, well known for its soothing and anti-irritation properties (proven by over 150 clinical studies).

“After a day or two we could see results. There was less redness and they didn’t itch as much at night. Their skin felt like a newborn baby’s. As their skin got better, they slept better and felt happier,” Tougeeda says.

Zahraa and Zaahid’s eczema responded very well, both during the therapy and in the months after they returned to South Africa.

“Most of the rashes have completely gone and they haven’t had any flare-ups,” Tougeeda says.

“Avène has given us hope. They can now be normal kids again”

It’s been almost two years since they started using Avène, and their skin is looking better than ever. Watch their full story:
