Top tips for online shopping

This time of year, the last thing anyone wants to do is fight crowds at a busy shopping centre, or spend hours in stores trying to find the best deals on holiday gifts. Luckily, there’s another way.

Many South Africans are turning to their computers or mobile devices to finish their holiday shopping quickly and easily from the comfort of their homes.

Based on a survey conducted by Ipsos, online spending in South Africa is expected to grow by 24% by the end of 2017, and the total spend of South African consumers is expected to reach R46 billion this year alone.

But manoeuvring the world of online shopping can be intimidating. How do I get the best deal? How can I trust a retailer to send me what I’m paying for? And what if I end up not liking what I ordered?

At PayPal, we know online shopping. Here are a few tips to be sure you get what you want this festive season, without ever having to get off your sofa. 

1. Take advantage of international deals
For years, shoppers around the world have looked forward to the deals US merchants offer on Black Friday and Cyber Monday to snap up bargains that were primarily targeted at US consumers. PayPal allows you to take advantage of these great deals by securely paying with your PayPal account on US sites, and has partnerships with services like Aramex Global Shopper to make sure you have no problems shipping your purchase to South Africa.

2. Shop from anywhere
Gone are the days of fighting for a parking space at a crowded shopping centre this December. Not only can you shop online from home on your desktop computer, you can do it from anywhere you want via your laptop or mobile phone. With PayPal’s new One Touch service, you only have to enter your card and billing details once, and then you can shop online with just one click.

3. Be confident in your purchase
Many people worry about buying something online only to receive something totally different from what they’ve ordered. No one wants to spend a lot of money on a designer handbag online only to receive a fake. If you shop with PayPal, it’s not an issue. If an eligible item that you’ve bought online doesn’t arrive, or doesn’t match the seller’s description, PayPal's Buyer Protection may reimburse you for the full amount of the item. 

4. If all else fails, you can always return it

Worst-case scenario, if Auntie Jane doesn’t like the holiday sweatshirt you selected for her, PayPal still has your back. PayPal’s Refunded Return program will reimburse your return shipping costs up to $30, or approximately R420.
