2016 marked the centenary of Solomon Tsekisho Plaatjie's Native Life in South Africa, a critical look at and arguement against the devastating Land Act of 1913. He opened the work with these now widely-circulated words: “Awaking on Friday morning, June 20, 1913, the South African native found himself, not actually a slave, but a pariah in the land of his birth.”

South African visual art has long been concerned with questions of belonging, dispossession, dislocation and land. Arts24 takes a brief look at a few artists working with and through the question of the land.
