The South African Book Fair is an initiative of the South African Book Development Council in partnership with the Fibre Processing & Manufacturing Seta. This year a simplified version of the physical fair will take place and offer a programme with over 22 sessions.

Tickets to access the full three-day programme costs R50 and can be purchased from

These sessions include:

  • Online author-led discussions
  • Poetry sessions at the Keorapetse Kgositsile Poetry Café
  • Skills development workshops

Author led sessions will touch on feminism, race and identity, crime, food, travel, science fiction and economics.

Running parallel to and as a part of the fair is the National Book Week Magic Tent. This children’s programme gives them access to online storytelling, poetry sessions, writing and illustration workshops as well as motivational puppet and theatre shows.

The South African Book Fair Marketplace has also moved online, making it even more accessible for exhibitors to reach a wider audience. Supporting, connecting and showcasing the publishing industry during the enormous challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic is a key focus of this year’s event.

The 2020 South African Book Fair will take place from 11 to 13 September 2020. For the full programme visit and look out for comprehensive updates from Arts24.
