Still in the process of developing her practice, visual artist, Khanyisile Mawhayi describes her practice as "a critique of institutions".

From April to June 2021, Stevenson exhibited Mawhayi's work as the first iteration of STAGE.

Bringing to mind the stages of lockdown and load shedding that characterise South Afriça's everyday, STAGE is an intervention where Stevenson gives artists who are no longer students, but not yet professionals, a stage to exhibit their work.

On Mawhayi's STAGE are two bodies of work: Soshangane/Shiyangane/Shangaan and The Ambivalent Blueprint.

Soshangane/Shiyangane/Shangaan is a series of soft pastel drawings of xibelani on black canvas. The Ambivalent Blueprint uses cyanotype, the printing process behind blueprints, to illustrate her background.

Below is a selection of works from the two series.
