In 1946 Frida Kahlo went to New York to receive spinal fusion surgery at the New York Hospital for Special Surgery. The procedure was a result of the bus accident that dealt an 18 year-old Kahlo a lifetime of severe chronic pain and partial paralysis. While in New York, Kahlo met artist José Bartoli. Following a successful surgery, Kahlo returned home in Mexico City where she recuperated.
