  • Anthony Mmesoma Madu is a ballet student from Nigeria.
  • He will train at the American Ballet Theatre through virtual classes before going there in 2021.
  • His viral video has also earned the non-profit dance studio, where he currently trains, donations

Ballet student Anthony Mmesoma Madu caught the attention of millions when a video of him dancing in the rain made it on to social media last month.

In the video a barefoot Madu can be seen gracefully working on his leaps and pirouettes on the course surface outside the Leap of Dance Academy where he trains in Nigeria.

Ballet is my life. I practice everywhere. When I am dancing I feel as if I’m on top of the world.. Any time my mom sends me on an errand I dance ballet before I go to that place and it makes me feel very, very happy.

Since then the video has been shared between more than 15 million people including those at the American Ballet Theatre in New York. The classical ballet company has given him a scholarship and arranged internet access that will allow him to pursue virtual training from the company.

This is until 2021 when Madu will train in the United States through a scholarship from Ballet Beyond Borders.

The viral video has also seen people making donations to the Leap of Dance Academy which doesn’t charge students for the classes it provides. Its founder, Daniel Ajala Owoseni says the money will go toward promoting ballet in Nigeria.

I know that we can’t actually afford the luxury of ballet or dance education… I want them to be able to enjoy what is happening abroad or other places
