The 2020 Encounters Gauteng Film Council Award went to Sam Soko for the feature documentary 'Softie'

On 30 August 2020 The Encounters Documentary Film Festival concluded festivities by announcing this year's winners for the Adiah and Encounters Gauteng Film Council awards.

The Adiah Award is reserved for the best documentary film by an African woman. This year, the Adiah Award was presented by The Ladima Foundation. The Ladima Foundation is a Pan-African non-profit organisation that looks to correct the major gender imbalances within the film, television and content creation industries. Six films at the festival were eligible for the Adiah Award.

Sitting on the jury for the Adiaha Award were filmmaker Patience Katushabe (Uganda), filmmaker Dina Naser (Palestine, Jordan) and manager of Social Transformation & Empowerment Projects, Theresa Hill (South Africa).

Together the jury chose to award the first place prize to director of Finding Sally, Tamara Mariam Dawit. Through the director’s search of her estranged activist aunt, Finding Sally is a femme and intimate examination of Ethiopia’s political past.
