When music duo, Darkie Fiction first made it onto the scene with their debut single Selula, they had one goal: to strengthen South Africa's sonic identity by drawing inspiration from the expansive archive created by household names like Letta Mbulu, Caiphus Semenya, Machance, Boom Shaka, Trompies, TKZee, Mdu, Bongo Maffin, Steve Kekana, Mshoza and Zola.

“Now that the music industry in South Africa is booming, we realised that it is important to preserve what really sounds South African," said Kuthulakwe-Nkosi Siboto in Little America, a 2018 documentary that Darkie Fiction made in partnership with music channel Trace and the Gauteng Film Commission.
