Cape Town – 'Bughead' fans everywhere were heartbroken when Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart split.

An insider revealed in July that the couple who'd been dating for two years broke "earlier this summer" and were "intentionally keeping their distance" from one another.

But then fans got a little confused – even suspicious after the couple appeared in W mag together.

Lili posted the image of the cover on Instagram with the caption, "A reliable source has confirmed that none of you know shit." followed by a picture of her Riverdale costar on his birthday with a love poem.

"I tried to find a poem that I could send to you. Because my words were failing me. But I searched and found nothing that did you justice. All of these love poems can't get it right. No one else's words could ever fit. They haven't known the fortune it is to love you..."

So are Cole and Lili actually broken up? Or are they just messing with us?

Well, it could be the latter.

At Variety's Power of Young Hollywood party Cole joked with Entertainment Tonight that he finds the rumours "incredibly" annoying but followed soon after, "No, I don't care. That's the nature of our industry.

"I think you have to poke fun of it a little bit," he added. "It's kind of something you sign up for, but as long as can keep it light and fun, it's all good," he said.

And he's certainly been keeping things light. When W mag came out with the former couple's interview, Cole posted the cover with Lili on his Instagram too – and with a far more cheeky caption.

"UNPRECEDENTED: Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart consume the flesh of 'reliable sources' to fuel their bacchanalian sex cult," he wrote.

So I wonder: 'Bugheads', has Cole Sprouse been trolling us all along?
