Cape Town – Bobbi Kristina Brown's former boyfriend, Nick Gordon, has died. He was 30 years old.

Joe S. Habachy, Gordon's attorney, confirmed the news to The Associated Press, TIME reports, and said in a statement, "My heart is heavy today after learning that my longtime client Nick Gordon died at the young age of thirty."

Habachy did not confirm the exact cause of Gordon's death but said to E! News, "While I cannot speak to the specific circumstances of his death, I can say that it's been truly heartbreaking to have witnessed firsthand the total devastation that drug addiction has wreaked upon a group of young friends, all of whom were loved and had immense potential.

"Despite all of the incredible challenges Nick faced over the last few years, I can honestly say that he worked hard to hold his head up and stay sober and that he genuinely wanted a happy, healthy life with his family more than anything else. My heart goes out to the family and friends Nick leaves behind and to any other families dealing with the losses and heartache caused by drugs."

Nick's relationship with Bobbi Kristina Brown first made headlines in 2012, the same year her mother, Whitney Houston, died. Houston was found dead at 48 from an accidental drowning in a bathtub. Authorities said years of drug abuse combined with heart disease played a crucial role in her death, reports Sky News.

Nick Gordon spent time with the famous family, with Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown taking an orphaned Gordon under their wing, reports E! News. He even ended up staying with the family.

Three years after her mom's death, Bobbi Kristina Brown was found facedown in a bathtub at age 22. Several drugs, including morphine and cocaine, was found in her system. She died six months later.

Though he was never charged, Nick was found "legally responsible" for her death and ordered to pay $36 million (R504 million) to Brown's Estate. He denied any wrongdoing and his lawyers slammed the allegations calling it "slanderous and meritless".
