- Demi Lovato recently revealed the moment she knew she was queer during Facebook's Coming Out 2020 event.
- Demi said it was while watching a scene between Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair's characters in Cruel Intentions.
- The characters kiss in the film, and Demi says of watching that scene she thought: "Oh wait a minute, I really like that, I want to try it."
Demi Lovato has spoken openly in recent years about her sexuality.
The singer, who recently split from fiancé Max Ehrich and released a new track, Still Have Me, spoke to Tan France on Facebook's Coming Out 2020 event on Friday, saying she first started exploring her sexuality after watching Cruel Intentions.
It was a scene between Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair's characters, Kathryn and Cecile, that caught her attention. In the scene, Kathryn teaches Cecile how to kiss and get to first base.
"It was definitely when I was young and definitely should not have been watching Cruel Intentions but did, and it was that scene where they made out on the park lawn," Demi says.
"I was just like, 'Oh wait a minute, I really like that, I want to try it.' And then when I was 17, I did get down with that."
Later, Demi goes on to say that she's always been open about who she is through her music – even if it wasn't explicitly so.
"There were times I wrote songs about girls that my fans thought I wrote about guys," she says. "I'm surprised that some of them didn't figure out that some of the songs were for certain people. I was sharing it with the world, yet I wasn't being completely obvious with what I was talking about.
"Music was my safe space."
