Los Angeles - Samuel L. Jackson's stammer is cured when he says "motherfucker".

The Hateful Eight actor's speech impediment was so debilitating when he was younger, he was bullied and "stopped speaking for almost a year in school" but discovered an unusual way to rectify his stutter.

He explained: "I have no idea how but it just does. It clicks a switch that stops the d-d-d b-b-b, because me, I stuttered really, really, really badly for a long time."

The 67-year-old actor - whose character in Snakes on a Plane, FBI agent Neville Flynn, memorably said: "I've had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane" - taught himself to control his speech impediment without formal speech therapy and his hard work eventually paid off.

He told SiriusXM DJ Howard Stern: "I read a lot. I read things about breathing exercises, I actually went to the library to combat stuttering."

Though he was able to get his stutter under control, Samuel admitted he still had a number of run-ins with bullies.

He said: "Yeah I fought a bit."

When asked if he won, he joked: "I could then but not anymore. I'm too old now."
