John Travolta confirms death of wife and actor Kelly Preston, 57

Kelly Preston has died. She was 57 years old.

The actor, known for her roles in films such as Mischief and Jerry Maguire, died on Sunday.

Her husband, actor John Travolta, confirmed the news on Instagram writing: "It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly has lost her two-year battle with breast cancer. She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many."

He added: "Kelly's love and life will always be remembered. I will be taking some time to be there for my children who have lost their mother, so forgive me in advance if you don't hear from us for a while. But please know that I will feel your outpouring of love in the weeks and months ahead as we heal."

Kelly shared daughter Ella and sons Benjamin and Jett – Jett died at the age of 16 in 2009 – with the Grease star.

A rep for the family spoke to People saying it was on the morning of 12 July that Kelly died. "Choosing to keep her fight private, she had been undergoing medical treatment for some time, supported by her closest family and friends," the rep said.

"She was a bright, beautiful and loving soul who cared deeply about others and who brought life to everything she touched. Her family asks for your understanding of their need for privacy at this time."

Kelly was born Kelly Kamalelehua Smith in Honolulu, Hawaii but changed her name to Kelly Preston before landing her first role in the romcom Mischief in 1985.

She went on to appear in films such as Twins, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, Holy Man with Eddie Murphy and Jeff Goldblum, Nothing to Lose with Tim Robbins and Martin Lawrence and Jack Frost.

Most notably she starred alongside Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire as his fiancee Avery Bishop, before taking a role in For Love of the Game with Kevin Costner.
