Cape Town – In a lengthy post on Facebook, famed TV presenter, Ricki Lake, has revealed how, for most of her life, she’s been struggling with hair loss.
"It has been debilitating, embarrassing, painful, scary, depressing, lonely, all the things," she wrote on Facebook. "There have been a few times where I have even felt suicidal over it. Almost no one in my life knew the level of deep pain and trauma I was experiencing. Not even my therapist/s over the years knew my truth.
"I know that by sharing my truth, I will be striking a chord with so so many women and men," she added. "I am not alone in this and my goal is to help others while at the same time unshackle myself from this quiet hell I have been living in."
The 51-year-old told her Facebook followers that it was playing Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray in 1988 that triggered the hair loss as she would have to triple-process and tease her hair every two weeks. "My hair was never the same," she said. "From Hairspray to Hairless."
She elaborates on her journey throughout the years which included taking supplements and getting steroid shots in her head, but she says she’s finally gotten to a place in her life where she feels "liberated" and "free".
"It is a new year and new decade and a new me. With the love and support of some of my dearest friends... I buzzed my hair off and it feels so good!"
The actress shared her inspiring message on New Year’s Day, with a beautiful portrait showing off her new buzzcut.
