Chi Chi DeVayne – a favourite of the RuPaul's Drag Race family – has died at the age of 34.

According to Variety, Chi Chi DeVayne, who was the drag persona of Zavion Davenport on the popular series, was hospitalised back in July for suspected kidney failure, and for many years lived with scleroderma, a rare disease in which the immune system attacks organs, blood vessels and tissues.

Last week Chi Chi revealed to fans on Instagram that she was back in hospital with pneumonia: "I'll be back soon".

In a statement, the star's mother, Tina Davenport, told CNN: "It is with tremendous sorrow that my family and I announce the passing of my beloved son, Zavion Michael Davenport, the world-renowned Chi Chi DeVayne. His final words to his family and fans, 'Never Give Up!'"

"We're heartbroken to learn that Chi Chi DeVayne has passed away today. Her drag spread a message of love and kindness that truly touched each person she met. Rest in power, Chi Chi," shared World of Wonder, the production company behind RuPaul's Drag Race, on Twitter.

RuPaul also released a statement, saying: "I am heartbroken to learn of the passing of Chi Chi DeVayne. I am so grateful that we got to experience her kind and beautiful soul. She will be dearly missed, but never forgotten. May her generous and loving spirit shine down on us all."
