Cape Town – South African actress Charlize Theron has shared that her eldest daughter, Jackson is transgender.

In an interview with The Daily Mail – that was published online on Thursday – the Academy Award-winner said:  "I thought she was a boy, too. Until she looked at me at three years old and said, 'I am not a boy!' "

The 43-year-old philanthropist has two daughters: Jackson and August, who is 4-years-old.

Charlize also touched on her upbringing in Benoni, explaining how it shaped who she is today and how she raises her children. She said: "I grew up in a country where people lived with half-truths and lies and whispers and nobody said anything outright, and I was raised very specifically not to be like that."

Parent24 has put together a great list of local organisations and resources relating to raising a transgender child, read that full list here.

Two organisations listed include Gender Dynamix which is an advocacy organisation advancing transgender human rights and the Triangle Project, which offers professional services and community for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) persons, their partners and families.
